Dog’s Refuge Home – Western Australia inc
The Dogs' Refuge Home (WA) Inc, in Shenton Park, is the oldest dog refuge in Western Australia, and very probably in Australia. It has operated since 1935. The refuge's constitution requires the provision of a haven for lost or abandoned dogs, accepting dogs given up by the public, and re-homing the dogs in our care to the best possible people. We also promote responsible pet ownership, and to this end, all our dogs are sterilised, vaccinated, micro chipped and given basic assessment and training.
From inception, the only government assistance received has been a miniscule one-off payment - a welcome gift, nevertheless. At present we are working on a redevelopment plan with Lotterywest, who gave a grant in 2005 for us to prepare a master plan to go before their board with a view to gaining funding for our intended redevelopment. The committee, staff, members and volunteers are all hopeful that 2006 will see bright new premises for our dogs, and efficiencies that will benefit the staff who care for them.
The refuge has at any given time 150 adults and 20 puppies in its care. This number is almost double the number in 2004. It is an inescapable fact that the unwanted dog problem is growing every day, and the refuge is under more and more pressure to deal with the problem. PLEASE help by doing any or all of the following:
Donations are always sought, and are most welcome, since the only way we can survive is by the generosity of the public in donations and bequests, plus fund raisers that we run. We welcome cash or credit donations; phone 08 9381 8166.
You could become a Caring Friend, committing an amount each month to be automatically credited to the refuge; you could sponsor one of our dogs for $40 a month or upwards, thereby getting pictures of your dog, plus regular reports on his/her progress.
You could also remember us in your will, of course, which greatly benefits the dogs. You could also think about becoming a foster carer for one of our more mature, "special needs" dogs. The refuge has several mature dogs needing a very special home. Medications would be supplied by the refuge. You would need to be an experienced dog handler, and to report on your dog's progress regularly.
Anyone who would like further information is welcome to ring Anne at the refuge on 08 9381 8166 - please be patient, as she is often attending to the dogs and not able to get to the phone quickly - or Chris Osborn our, secretary, on 08 9481 2040, or Noelle Revera, our president, on 08 9370 2784.
Alternatively you can visit our website www.dogsrefuge.org.au for pictures of our dogs and information on forthcoming events.
Otherwise there is always the opportunity for you to buy our beautiful calendar which has just hit the streets for 2006.
As we do not receive any government funding we need to muster up the troops and do our own fundraising. This years calendar is by far one of the best and boasts some amazing pictures and offers to purchasers. For a very reasonable $7.50 you get 12 months of calendar and host of other offers including tear out coupons for offers and other information.
Feel free to take a sneak peek at the calendar by going to this link http://www.perthphotostudio.com/vert_flip.swf
If you like what you see you can even purchase it online from Perfect Paws using their secure server and online shopping facility. Simply look for the Dog’s Refuge Home link in the online shop section.
Please support the businesses featured in this calendar, since they are major contributors to our cause, and without such help it is impossible for us to operate. We sincerely appreciate the support of many volunteers and members of our organisation in the form of money and time spent in the challenging task to better the life of an unwanted dog. We hope you find the discount vouchers useful. Please spread the word of this wonderful idea to other businesses who might be interested in joining us as a sponsor for other publications.
We also offer for the first time a set of postcards with copy portraits of the ones on the cover of this calendar. These cards can be purchased from our shop and are great for saying thank you to someone, or simply to collect the stunning dog portraits. You will also be contributing to our cause. All proceeds go directly to the home and the dogs get the maximum benefit from your contribution.
